Category: Ambidexterity

Ambidexterity is the ability to use both hands equally well — or at least to use one’s non-dominant hand (or foot!) with some level of proficiency.

Being ambidextrous provides many advantages in life because it makes both your brain and your body more balanced and developed.

I was largely inspired in my life-long fascination with ambidexterity by my exposure to the inspirational genius Leonardo da Vinci as a child. Leonardo was left-handed, and wrote his diaries in mirror image (from right to left), so that he wouldn’t have to drag his pen across the wet ink on the page. When I broke my (right) wrist in 4th grade, I started writing everything with my left hand, and writing in mirror image and/or with my left hand became life-long hobbies for me. I do not have particularly “good” writing with either hand, but I do work to improve it, and take a special interest in writing in long-hand.

Over the years, I started working to be able to do more-and-more stuff with my non-dominant hand, and I eventually (successfully) tackled shaving, eating , dribbling, and even using chop sticks. These days, I am constantly ‘on the lookout’ for ambidexterity opportunities, and endeavor to do everything I can with both hands.

It is significant to me because it represents one of the first pieces
